I shipped an order late

I normally ship all my orders either on time or early but last Friday i messed up and didn't look at my orders to see when they need to be shipped by, and it turns out there's one order that was supposed to be shipped on that day. I am going to be shipping it out on Monday, but I was wondering how bad this is for my account and if anyone has had experience with this.

Certainly others have experienced this.

How bad? It will affect your metrics of course. If you are a high volume seller the effect will be negligible; if a low volume seller it could cost you the buy box eligibility -- although a delayed action with that.

I had a screw up over the 4th of July weekend last year and didn't realize Friday was a normal ship day and had over 140 shipments that were late and it destroyed my late shipment rate. It was very nerve wracking and, it took a few weeks to get everything back on track, but I made sure to reach out to Amazon to let them know I was actively rectifying the issue. As long as you don't continue the trend you will be fine.

This happens to most folks at some point. We always use this as a learning experience and implement changes to make sure this was a one time thing we won't allow to happen again. Your metrics will straighten out if you get back to normal. Most Amazon policies are simply intended to keep your offerings available as often as possible. They only penalize you when your behavior is going to cost both of you money!

Yes, and Yes.

Here is what MAY happen:

The Buyer will NOT notice, realize or care if they receive their item a couple of days Late, and nothing Bad will happen to you.

Or

The Buyer WILL notice because the Delivery-Date was important as part of a pre-arranged plan. The Buyer MAY file an A-Z Claim for INR, which you WILL LOSE, not only giving the Buyer a Full Refund including Postage, but ALSO hitting your Seller Metrics with an Order Defect, which will (most likely) result in the Loss of the Buy-Box on your listings.

Or

The Buyer is knowledgeable about Amazon Policy, and seeing that it shipped LATE, and realizing that you are therefore without ANY protection, probably WOULD file the A-Z Claim, get their money back AND get to keep the item when it finally arrives. AND you still get the Metrics Hit.

So, rather than risk giving it away for FREE PLUS getting a Metrics Hit, I would have simply Cancelled the Order, first sending a message to the Buyer with some excuse and requesting that they Re-Order. You may decide to offer something Cool with the ordered item for FREE as an apology and a Thanks for the Reorder.

The Metrics Hit you take for the Cancellation will only last one week.

Most importantly, LEARN from this mistake so that you do NOT repeat it.

You should NEVER ship an order Late, EVER. Try to strive to achieve that control over your Business, for your own and your Businesses sake.

Wow! I did this a couple of weeks ago unknowingly and shipped it as soon as I noticed. I have not seen a metric hit to this day. Not sure why, but it caused me to be more alert.

It's almost like Amazon wants us to ship the same day, if not then they present us with higher postage options. "Ain't nobody got TIME for that!" :)
