I shipped an item on my own, and the customer requested a refund. The customer initiated the return process, but the shipping status shows that only the label has been printed. The refund request was made about a month ago. Should I contact the customer?

No, do not contact the buyer. Often the actual return is just too much trouble. Continue to do nothing.

Isn't that what we strive to do here? Why would you want to change it?

There are some nefarious customers who hope sellers will just refund them without them having to return the product. The customer has the return label and if they still want to return it they will. If not, don't worry about it.
