Shouldn't you have had products in mind before opening your account?

Just be aware your account may be deactivated for inactivity while you look for those products.

Seriously? Don't you think you ought to do your due diligence yourself without asking other sellers trying to scratch out a living for help? Go to trade shows, speak with legitimate wholesalers, conduct channel checks, work in retail for a time so you learn the ins an outs. But don't expect other sellers to give you the lowdown on what to sell thereby taking food from their own tables.

Make your own product. Because once you put in years or maybe even weeks or months, whoever this great source is will decide they do not need you, they can just sell on Amazon directly and basically try to get your account eliminated. I started off with probably 15 companies I sold products for, legitimately. I have 5 left. The latest over 20 years of purchases and their policy is "not to assist with any Amazon or marketplace issues." They don't care if you are a longtime customer or not because they don't need you anymore. You will be out your money, your product if you sent it to amazon and possibly out of business. Don't give up your day job, selling on marketplaces is getting tougher every day.

I have some inventory that has gone stale since Amazon AI ruined the product detail pages and because Amazon changed the search algorithms. You are welcome to buy as much of that as you want LOL.

But yes, much like my fellow sellers are stating here, it takes some industry knowledge to know how, what, and where to buy from.

My best tip is not to listen to the Youtube or Tiktok "experts" you see running around Walmart, Costco, Sam's Club, and any other retailers scanning items. That's a great way to get suspended very quickly.

I too was in your position in the early 2000's when I started selling online. Your strategy of opening the account and sourcing later would've been very profitable around 20yrs ago, when you could go down to Walmart or Dollar Tree and resell their cheap stuff. I did it and it was easy and profitable most of the time. Those days are loooong gone, and you'll be banned for life by Amazon if you get caught doing "retail arbitrage" today. Let's not do that!

Here's my best advice to you. First step is to find out what interests you and then you'll already have some knowledge about it. For me the choice was easy because I've been a "nerd" all my life and have collected toys for 30+ years. So I searched online for legitimate toy/collectable wholesale companies and registered with them. You're also going to need a free tax id number, which you can get online from your state. That number will make you a "legitimate" reseller and then you can buy from wholesale companies. Nowadays I have expanded my buying to the toy companies themselves, which is a better price than buying through a distributor. That's my advice to you based on my personal experience, which I wish someone would have told me many years ago, before I went through a lot of trial and error before getting it right. There are plenty of other legitimate ways to source product which other sellers are posting about on this thread. You have many options, but none of them are easy. If you want to make a quick buck, then go to ebay where you can sell anything that's legal !!

Does my advice make sense?

GOOD LUCK!!!

Well, this is what no one will tell you. You shop for products where Amazon shops, retail stores across the country shop and hundreds of successful Amazon sellers shop.

That is the weeklong ASD show in Las Vegas, March 2025.Hundreds of manufacturers from all around the world display there, offering over a million new products to sell. It only costs showing your retailers license to get in the door. Once inside, if you can't find high yield profit products to sell, there is something wrong with you.

Just because the vendors displaying sell to Macy's and Target, don't think that they won't sell to you to. The salespeople are there to find new customers to sell their products and find new buyers. With a $100 minimum purchase, they will establish an account with you too. Even if you do not buy, and are just interested, let then scan your badge. You will be placed on their wholesale mailing list for a year.

The beauty of it is this. No one Amazon seller or retail store can sell everything there is shown on display. There is always room for one more, like you to enter the picture.

_________________________________________________________________________

Like @Quincy_Amazonsaid above, Amazon does have guidelines for sourcing products. Amazon will not tell you where to buy or how to operate a successful online business for profit. That is what each seller brings to the table. All of the manufacturers displaying at the show have been vetted and will meet Amazon's requirements for sale on the site, including giving a prober invoice.

You wouldn't go downtown and lease an empty building, and THEN begin to consider what you intend to do with it.

I am going to assume you are one of those New Sellers who watched a YouTube video on how anyone can get RICH Selling on Amazon.

THIS.

IS.

NOT.

TRUE.

Selling on Amazon CAN be rewarding, however it is VERY detailed, with a great many rules and policies a Seller MUST know. Ignorance is NO excuse to Amazon.

FIRST STEP: PUT YOUR ACCOUNT ON "VACATION MODE". DO IT NOW.

SECOND STEP: Complete Amazon Seller University, available for FREE on this very site.

THIRD STEP: Carefully consider just what it is that you have a breadth of knowledge about, and what in that area has products or services that you could offer.

FOURTH STEP: Contact the Manufacturer(s) or Recognized Authorized Wholesale Distributors of the products you wish to Sell, and inquire about the availability to open a Wholesale Account with them, and the minimum order requirements needed to maintain your account.

FIFTH STEP: Check on Amazon to make SURE that the products you intend to offer are ALLOWED on Amazon, or require Brand APproval to Sell on Amazon.

SIXTH STEP: Place your order for your products. Since you are clearly a new Seller, DO NOT utilize FBA until such time that you are SURE you know what you are doing, and exactly what Selling FBA will cost you.

SEVENTH STEP: Receive and store your products in such a manner that you can process and ship an order within 2 days.

Then, and ONLY then should you take your account OFF of Vacation Mode and begin selling.

If you choose to ignore these directions, be prepared for an unhappy and unprofitable experience as an Amazon Seller, and we will all prepare for your inevitable "Please Help - My Account has been Deactivated" Post.

Good Luck!

NOT.

Good Luck!
