Amazon Renewed JP – Quality Requirements

Overview: This document covers the general quality requirements for a product to be eligible for sale on Amazon Renewed. The requirements outlined below are intended to serve as a minimum required quality bar across all Renewed product categories. Any category-specific requirements are noted in Appendix A and will supersede the general product quality requirements. Any brand-specific requirements are noted in Appendix B and will supersede both category-specific requirements and general product quality requirements.

A. General product quality requirements. All Renewed products must meet the following requirements:

Permitted products

  • All Renewed products must be capable of being repaired/refurbished and tested to look and work like new in accordance with our Global Quality Policy. Repair/refurbish capability means that products must have electrical and/or mechanical components that can be replaced and/or upgraded to new or like-new condition.

  • All Renewed products must comply with applicable laws and technical standards and must be legally available to the customers after purchase. Communication devices such as mobile phone and smartphones must not be modified in design, specifications, or functions. Only repairs aimed at restoring the defect, damage, or deterioration to their original state or function are permitted.


  1. Product inspection and testing
    • Each product must be inspected, repaired (if applicable), cleaned and tested to function and look like new.
    • If repaired, all components must be Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) parts. Such parts can be new or refurbished to a like-new condition (with the exception of Apple for which no harvested batteries can be used – see Appendix B).
    • No signs of cosmetic damage (scratches, dents, etc.) should be visible when the product is held 30 centimeters away.
    • Any markings on external surfaces of the product must be intact (e.g. product logo). No additional markings (e.g. supplier logo, engravings, etc.) are allowed.
    • All products must be restored to their original factory settings and be fully unlocked for use.
    • Where present, batteries must have a capacity that exceeds 80% of the new equivalent.
    • Where present, displays should have no dead or stuck pixels, and show no signs of dimming.
    • Where applicable, products must be upgradeable to the latest firmware supported by the OEM.
  2. Accessories
    • Products must include all accessories that come with a new equivalent (see Appendix A and B for any exceptions).
    • Accessories may not be sold as standalone ASINs.
    • Accessories provided must be OEM, either new or refurbished to a like-new condition (see Appendix A and B for any exceptions). Consumable accessories (e.g. air and water filters, brushes, strings, etc.) must be in new condition.
    • Where present, wall plugs must meet country standards of where the product is sold. Adapters or external converters are not allowed as an alternative. Voltage, frequency, plug type must meet Japanese standards.
    • Products that come with a remote control should have a remote control that is already paired with the receiver. Alternatively, the package must contain an instruction manual on how the customer can pair the remote with the receiver and troubleshoot communication issues. A remote controller that uses wireless requires a GITEKI mark and a GITEKI number. It must be put outside the product or inside the battery case.
    • For items that require the PSE mark, a precautionary statement for use is required in the instruction manual. For products that do not require the PSE mark, it is recommended that the instruction manual be included. You can increase customer satisfaction and reduce negative reviews and product returns. If you do not have the actual instruction manual, it is recommended that you include a link or reference to the manufacturer's instruction manual. If required by law, a safety guide must be included.
  3. Instruction Manuals
    • The inclusion of Japanese instruction manuals is encouraged, and required if required by law. In the absence of physical instruction manuals, a link /reference to the manufacturer’s instruction manual can be included, unless otherwise required by law. Safety instructions in Japanese must be included where required by law.
  4. Personally Identifiable Information (PII)
    • Products must be free of any PII. Examples of PII include but are not limited to name, date of birth, fingerprints or other biometric data, social security number, street address, email address, cloud storage account and credit card information.
  5. Packaging
    • Products must be packaged in their original packaging or in a new box. No mailing and padded envelopes can be used.
    • Packaging must be clean and free of any damage, markings and non-product related labels and stickers.
    • If the original packaging is used, the serial numbers on the box and product must match. In addition, labeling should be applied on at least two sides of the package, explicitly identifying the product as "整備済み品" in Japanese.
    • Products and accessories must not be in contact with each other or move around in the box during handling.
    • Packaging must pass drop-tests based on widely adopted standards like those of the International Safe Transit Association (ISTA) or regional equivalents.

B. Product Sourcing & Distribution. All Renewed products must comply with Amazon’s policy, authorized for sale in the Japan and must also comply with all relevant laws and regulations (including but not limited to the Electrical Appliances and Materials Safety Act, Consumer Product Safety Act, Radio Act, and Telecommunications Business Act). Unauthorizedly procured products such as stolen products or products that have been modified in their original design, specifications, or functions are not permitted.

C. Warranty. All products must come with the following terms, to be honored by the manufacturer, refurbisher, reseller or third-party provider:


  1. Type of Coverage
    • Each Renewed supplier is responsible for providing a warranty on Renewed products.
    • The warranty covers any defects that arise over the period of coverage.
    • If within the warranty period, the customer has the right to receive a refund or replacement for any defective product without incurring shipping or handling fees. Return address must be located in Japan and no additional international shipping fee can be charged to customers when they return an item or receive a replacement within the warranty period.
    • Obligations do not apply to defects caused by insufficient maintenance or improper installation, operation and use by the owner.
  2. Period of Coverage
    • The minimum required warranty period for products sold in Japan must be at least 180 days from the date of sale.
  3. Representations
    • Warranty information (terms, contact information) must be available in Japanese and be included in each package. Products must include the Amazon Renewed warranty card template, or an equivalent warranty card. You can find the design template and file to download and print here.
    • Products that are sealed and already contain adequate warranty information by the manufacturer do not require any further action.

D. Quality controls and enforcement

  1. Seller Quality Management System (QMS)
    • The seller will maintain an internal QMS that enables the timely identification and reduction of product quality and operational defects.
  2. Performance monitoring
    • To help ensure compliance with the Amazon Renewed global quality requirements, sellers must meet the following performance metrics:
      • Order Defect Rate < 0.8%
      • Seller's overall Average Product Rating (APR) > 4.0
    • Failure to comply with the Renewed quality requirements may lead to the removal of selling privileges on Amazon Renewed, and may require the submission of a "Plan of Action" to remediate and regain said privileges.
    • At any given point and at its sole discretion, Amazon Renewed reserves the right to remove any selling privileges if it is believed that an optimal customer experience is compromised.

Appendix A: Requirements by Product Category


  1. Wireless
    1. All devices must undergo diagnostic tests with the use of external applications in order to ensure functionality and data sanitization. Said devices must be restored to their original factory settings.
    2. All devices must undergo IMEI checks to ensure that they are not blocklisted or stolen. Sellers must maintain IMEI check records for at least 120 days to support periodic inventory and order-level audits.
    3. Devices where the network usage restriction is △(triangle), ×(cross) and - (hyphen) state are not permitted. Check the confirmation page provided by respective mobile carrier company for definitions and inquiries of network usage restrictions.
    4. Devices that are locked to a specific network are not permitted. All devices must be SIM unlocked.
    5. Headphones and SIM cards are not mandatory. Any device that requires a SIM card must carry a SIM removal tool (original or generic).
    6. The use of OEM accessories is encouraged (but not required). Any generic accessories must meet country standards of where the product is sold (see requirements on PSE/GITEKI compliance on Seller Central).
    7. As per Japanese industry conventions, phones must have a built-in, mandatory camera shutter sound.
      1. Cellular frequency must fit to frequency band offered by Japanese mobile carriers.
      2. Applications available at Japanese digital distribution services such as App Store (iOS) and Google Play (Android) must be accessible from a Renewed device. The Renewed device must be regional restriction free.
      3. OS must be built-in Japanese or supporting multi-language including Japanese.

        If a Renewed product works with other devices / platforms using Japanese OS, the Renewed product must be compatible with Japanese OS.

    8. Screen protectors are encouraged but not required. Screen protection should come in the form of device seal wraps that can be removed upon unboxing, not tempered glass/ liquid screen protectors that remain attached to the device.
  2. Personal Computers
    1. All Microsoft laptops, tablets and PCs must come pre-installed with a Windows operating system that is supported by Microsoft.
    2. All Microsoft laptops, tablets and PCs must be equipped with authentic software licenses, as evidenced by attaching a Genuine Certificate of Authenticity(COA) sticker provided by a Microsoft Authorized Refurbisher.
    3. The use of OEM accessories (e.g. keyboards and mice) is encouraged (but not required). Any generic accessories must be compatible with regional requirements where the product is sold (see requirements on PSE/GITEKI compliance on Seller Central).
    4. During packaging, it is encouraged (but not required) for monitor screens to be separated from their base and any other attachments.
    5. OS (e.g. Windows OS) must be built-in in Japanese. If a Renewed product works with other devices / platforms using Japanese OS, Renewed product has to be compatible with Japanese OS.
    6. Computer keyboards must be Japanese JIS.
  3. Printers
    • All ink and laser printers must come with compatible, new printing cartridges. Printing cartridges must be removed from the printer and placed inside a sealed plastic bag to prevent ink or powder from leaking into the box.
    • Moving parts such as doors and print heads must be taped and secured during transit. External paper trays must be disconnected and packed separately. When not using a printer’s original packaging, you will need to use cushioning and other packaging to keep your products and parts stationary in the shipping box.
    • Renewed ink and toner cartridges (re-manufactured, refurbished, refilled or other derivative) will not be allowed under stand-alone ASINs.
    • Printers featuring Wi-Fi must have both their wired and wireless connectivity fully functional.
    • If the products have communication functions, GITEKI mark and GITEKI number are required.
    • A quick start guide must be included with all Printers and Landline Telephones (including conference call systems as well as VoIP, Landline, PBX, corded and cordless telephones). When a quick start guide is not available, the user manual must be included in paper or digital format.
  4. Small Kitchen Appliances
    • Food processing products will only contain material that is compliant with applicable laws. All surfaces that could be in direct contact with food or liquids must be cleaned and sanitized in accordance with local regulations and standards.
    • Upon cleaning and prior to packaging, all products must be thoroughly dried. Products containing liquid tanks (e.g., espresso machine boilers, tea kettles, etc.) must be drained in full.
    • No external stains or signs of calcified water should be visible on any of the external surfaces, when the product is held 30 centimeters away.
    • Moving parts such as doors, trays and containers must be taped and secured during transit.
    • If the products have communication functions, GITEKI mark and GITEKI number are required.
  5. Camera
    • Camera lens autofocus must be inspected to ensure works properly.
    • Camera digital card reader must be inspected to ensure properly stores and retrieves saved pictures.
    • Wifi or Bluetooth functionality must be inspected to work properly.
    • Camera lens cover must be secured on to lens when packaged.
    • Products must include all accessories that come with a new equivalent (e.g. power chargers, power cords, data cables, and user manual).
    • If the products have communication functions, GITEKI mark and GITEKI number are required.
  6. Power Tools, Lawn and Garden Equipment
    • Products under these categories might be sold without their accessories, as long as this is clearly communicated through the Amazon product listing page.
    • Petrol-operated products must be fully drained and wrapped in plastic bags in order to avoid any leaks and contamination within the package.
    • If the products have communication functions, GITEKI mark and GITEKI number are required.
  7. Video game consoles
    • Gaming consoles must be tested for overheating and ensure full functionality of the optical disc drive or cartridge slot, and of all input and output ports (for example: A/C power, video, gaming controller, memory card).
    • Remote controller buttons, joysticks and connectivity (both wired and wireless) must be fully functional. Remote controllers sold in bundles must be pre-paired with their gaming console.
    • If the products have communication functions, GITEKI mark and GITEKI number are required.

Appendix B: Requirements by Brand


  1. Apple
    1. Apple-branded (OEM) charging cables and wall chargers are not permitted with iPhone products. Only generic accessories that are purchased directly from an approved list of authorized brands are permitted. You can find the list of authorized iPhone accessory brands.

    2. For other Apple products, the use of Apple-branded (OEM) accessories is permitted but not required.
    3. All charging cables must be Mfi ('Made for iPhone/iPod/ipad') certified and all chargers must be PSE safety certified (see requirements on PSE compliance) and GITEKI certified, and accompanied with a card or sticker in the packaging stating that:
      1. The included cable is MFi-Certified to be compatible with Apple devices
      2. The included charger is PSE safety certified
    4. Apple accessories and parts including chargers, charging cables and earphones are not permitted to be sold as standalone products.
    5. As part of the restoration to original factory settings, under Paragraph A.1.e, the “Find my iPhone” must be disabled from all devices.
    6. The use of harvested or refurbished Apple batteries is not allowed, for any of the Apple product categories. Any potential battery swaps will require the use of new Apple batteries only.
    7. The Amazon Renewed store currently supports Apple iPhone models: 7/7 Plus, 8/8 Plus, X, XS/XS Max, XR, 11, 11 Pro/11 Pro Max, SE (2nd Generation) 12, 12 Mini, 12 Pro, and 12 Pro Max.
    8. Both OEM and generic can be listed for the Apple watch band. However, sellers are prohibited from creating their own new ASINs. Make sure to list the products under the ASINs created by Amazon.

Listing Restrictions

All Renewed products must be capable of being repaired/refurbished and tested to look and work like new in accordance with our Global Quality Policy. Repair/refurbish capability means that products must have electrical and/or mechanical components that can be replaced and/or upgraded to new or like-new condition.

Wireless device protective cases, charging accessories (cables, wall plugs, etc.) and ink and toner cartridges are not permitted to be sold in the Amazon Renewed program.

To ensure a positive customer experience, Amazon will remove any products from Amazon Renewed that are not capable of being repaired/refurbished, pose a hygienic or safety risk or violate any other Amazon policies.

Appendix C: ASIN Creation Method and product requirements

Please see below for ASIN creation rule and requirements by product type.

For Non-Apple branded Personal Computers and Wireless

  Products Accessories
Product Requirement The products must be OEM. If repaired, all components must be Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) parts. Such parts can be new or refurbished to a like-new condition. Products must include all accessories that come with a new equivalent.

The use of OEM accessories is encouraged.

Though the use of OEM accessories is encouraged, this is not required.

ASIN creation rule "If you have customized the genuine product + α, please register it as a new ASIN.

Example: When a wireless function is added to an ASIN that does not have a wireless LAN function, etc. "

If the ASIN comes with a genuine (OEM) body + compatible accessory, please list under the existing ASIN. Creation of a new ASIN is prohibited.

Example: PC body (genuine product) + compatible power cable, etc.

For Apple branded products (excluding iPhone)

  Products Accessories
Product Requirement The products must be OEM. If repaired, all components must be Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) parts. Such parts can be new or refurbished to a like-new condition. Also, no harvested batteries can be used. The product must come with all the accessories that come with the new equivalent product. However, for iPhone, earphones and SIM card are not required due to the requirements of "1. Wireless (smartphones, mobile phones, tablets, etc.)". IPhones that require a SIM card must come with a tool (genuine or compatible) to remove the SIM card. Also, for iPhone, genuine (OEM) accessories (charger and cable) cannot be used.
All charging cables must be Mfi ('Made for iPhone/iPod/ipad') certified and all chargers must be PSE safety certified and GITEKI certified, and accompanied with a card or sticker in the packaging stating that:
  1. The included cable is MFi-Certified to be compatible with Apple devices
