Product ID (GTIN) requirements by category

Amazon requires the manufacturer's standard product ID to list items in most categories. Requirements, exceptions or exemptions by product category are noted in the table.

Product Category Product Code Required Memo, exceptions or exemptions
Books Yes ISBN, EAN, or JAN is required for all books. Sellers are able to submit UPC exemption when sellers list Non-ISBN/JAN books like Kosho, duplicated ISBN/JAN books like magazine or seller exclusive products which are guided on Listing Rules. However, sellers are prohibited to offer Non-ISBN/JAN Dojin books by Restricted Products guideline.
Music, Video, DVD Yes JAN/EAN is required if makers assign them to products. Sellers are able to submit UPC exemption when sellers list Non JAN/EAN assigned products such as Vinyl, cassette Indies labels or seller exclusive products which are guided on Listing Rules. However, sellers are prohibited to Adult or copyright violating Dojin books by Restricted Products guideline.
Video Games Yes JAN/EAN is required if makers assign them to products. Sellers are able to submit UPC exemption when sellers list Non JAN/EAN assigned products such as original brand or seller exclusive products which are guided on Listing Rules.
Software Yes JAN/EAN is required if makers assign them to products. Sellers are able to submit UPC exemption when sellers list Non JAN/EAN assigned products such as original brand or seller exclusive products which are guided on Listing Rules. However, sellers are prohibited to Adult or copyright violating Dojin books by Restricted Products guideline
Electronics Yes Major brands require a JAN but exemptions may be requested for private label brands.**

  • Unique Items that are not given product codes by manufacture (i.e., product parts or components of small volume production with special functions)
  • Products for business-to-business transaction (not for retail sales)
  • Sold as a package without a product code

Notes for product code exemptions

*To receive approval from Amazon, product code exemption request is required in each category. (*Only pro-merchants are eligible for selling the products without the product IDs.)

*To receive approval from Amazon, ensure that the product is not already listed before applying for the code exemption. The condition of an item for which JAN exemption is requested must be "New."

*Amazon reserves the right to cancel the permission if the approval that was given from Amazon to the seller is misused or for a non-compliance of our guidelines.
