Condition guidelines

Note: This page provides condition guidelines of the following categories: Common guidelines 1 and 2, Books, Music, Software, Personal Computers, Electronics, Video & DVD, Video Games, Baby & Maternity, Watches, Beauty, Pet Supplies, Clothing & Fashion, Shoes & Bags, Jewelry, Drugstore, Food & beverage, and Kindle Accessories

Assigning the correct condition to each product you list on Amazon is the first step toward providing a great customer experience. It is important to make a careful assessment of your product before specifying its condition.

For information about selecting a condition for your product, see Selecting Conditions.

Note: These conditions will apply in addition to any other contracts and the Amazon.co.jp Acceptable Use Policy for sellers. They do not limit any of the terms of said contracts. If it cannot be confirmed that a listing complies with these guidelines, it may be removed. Consult the Amazon Acceptable Use Policy for sellers, as well as other applicable contracts, for more information on prohibited listings. Condition guidelines are different for each product category.

Unlike books with optional bonus items, books are not given different ISBNs depending on whether it comes with bundled materials or not. Example: Books with CDs included, etc. Note: Bundled materials may not be sold separately.)

Listing these books as anything other than "Acceptable", or failing to mention in the listing that bundled materials are missing, may be cause for Amazon to remove the listing from the site. "Bundled materials" refer to anything included with the original book. Unlike books with optional bonus items, books are not given different ISBNs depending on whether it comes with its bundled materials or not. Example: Books with CDs included, etc.
  • When listing magazines with a Magazine Periodical Code (magazine JAN Code) printed on them, do not use the magazine JAN code in the listing. Instead, list the magazine's release date and month number in the condition-details field.

  • If the cover of the book being listed is different from the image on the Product Detail Page, make sure to mention that the book features an "older cover" in the condition-details field of the listing.
  • Books listed as collectible must provide added value; for example, they must feature an autograph or be an out-of-print edition. • The condition of items that are not bound, or items that were never bound and are sold as loose sheets, must be listed as "Used - Acceptable". In this instance, state that the item is not bound or was never bound in the condition-details field of the listing. Listing unbound books as "Used - Good" or better, or not stating that they are unbound in the listing, may be considered sufficient cause for Amazon to remove the listing from the site.

*Notes when selling used PC software:

Many PC software packages use a product code or password at the time of installation to register the software to the purchaser. If the original owner (seller) is listing the PC software, he/she must provide the buyer with the disc and original product code or password in order to transfer the license to the buyer. Once the sale is complete, the seller may also be required to contact the relevant software publisher to transfer his/her registration, giving the buyer access to all relevant technical support, upgrades and bonuses. Some software may also require an activation key at the time of installation. These keys are uploaded to the software publisher's server, making it difficult to transfer software to a third party. Please check this before listing used PC software on the site.

If the buyer is unable to use the software due to registration-transfer issues, the seller agrees to provide a full refund.
